Spreading Humanity One Step at a Time...

With the rapid increase of homeless people across the globe it is refreshing to see that there are people out there that want to help. Some of these people are college students. They realize that this could be them right now but they are fortunate enough to not be in that situation and appreciate the quality of life that they have. An example of this are the service trips that some colleges have for their students. Students travel to different parts of the globe or even parts of the U.S. like Louisiana, to lend a hand in anyway possible and learn something about the culture or people that they didn't know before.

Homelessness is on the uprise!!!!

Homelessness is a nationwide problem affecting thousands of people each year. All 50 states inhabit thousands of homeless people and the amount is steadily increasing. This is due to the direct relationship between homelessness and poverty. With the recession that the country faces and the amount of people becoming unemployed there is no telling how many people will be fortunate enough to remain from being homeless. It has been reported by the Coalition of the Homeless that number of homeless people in New York City has risen by nearly 6 percent since 2007. During the city’s 2007 Fiscal Year, 102,187 different New Yorkers were reported to have slept in homeless shelters. "At the same time that the use of homeless shelters was increasing significantly, the homeless living on the streets declined."(Dunkel) Vera Institute did a study that's results shot that about 50 percent of the homeless families in shelters have either a formal or informal eviction in their recent history.

Hidden Jewels in the Gutter

There are homeless people everywhere that develop many different trades and techniques. They do this in order to make a small living to possibly by a meal, get fare to get to a shelter or the tiny cluster of the city that they call home. Many homeless people rather entertain those whom they are begging for money rather than just simply beg. They do things like singing, dancing, and if they can playing an instrument. They put on a small show in hopes that enough people will give them money to get it for whatever they need it for.

Temple Kids assist NYC Homeless

Youth groups from two reform congregations came to together to help the homeless. They stayed up pass midnight giving the homeless food, blankets ad other amenities. This goes to show you that not only adults are trying to help the homeless but also young people are making strides in helping those who are impoverished. As the youth go to help the homeless, it has become a learning experience for them. They are now open minded and have the ability to speak with the recipients, who often share their personal stories with the volunteers. As you read the article you will notice the relationship that developed between the youth group and the homeless.

Homeless family

Not only are there homeless men and women flooding the New York City streets but now there are young children joining them in this poor, unfortunate lifestyle. When a family becomes homeless and kicked into the street it is everyone within the household that suffers, not just the parents or older children. In some fortunate households, homeless children can possibly stay with other relatives or friends of the family that are in a position to take them in. Some often choose not to take that route because they want to stay with there parents. The community tries and find a home for the homeless because there are just so many of them that it is very difficult. They have to go through tedious work like going through a screening process.
